First, plastic’s durability, low cost, and malleability mean that it’s being used in more and more consumer and industrial products. While many different types of trash enter the ocean, plastics make up the majority of marine debris for two reasons. A 2018 study found that synthetic fishing nets made up nearly half the mass of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, due largely to ocean current dynamics and increased fishing activity in the Pacific Ocean. These percentages vary by region, however. Denser debris can sink centimeters or even several meters beneath the surface, making the vortex’s area nearly impossible to measure.Ĩ0 percent of plastic in the ocean is estimated to come from land-based sources, with the remaining 20 percent coming from boats and other marine sources. In addition, not all of the trash floats on the surface. The North Pacific Subtropical Gyre is too large for scientists to trawl. No one knows how much debris makes up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Crossing the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, Moore and his crew noticed millions of pieces of plastic surrounding his ship. Moore was sailing from Hawaii to California after competing in a yachting race. While oceanographers and climatologists predicted the existence of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, it was a racing boat captain by the name of Charles Moore who actually discovered the trash vortex. Oceanographers and ecologists recently discovered that about 70% of marine debris actually sinks to the bottom of the ocean. The seafloor beneath the Great Pacific Garbage Patch may also be an underwater trash heap. This soup is intermixed with larger items, such as fishing gear and shoes. The microplastics of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch can simply make the water look like a cloudy soup. Even satellite imagery doesn’t show a giant patch of garbage. Microplastics can’t always be seen by the naked eye. In reality, these patches are almost entirely made up of tiny bits of plastic, called microplastics. Many plastics, for instance, do not wear down they simply break into tinier and tinier pieces.įor many people, the idea of a “garbage patch” conjures up images of an island of trash floating on the ocean. The amount of debris in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch accumulates because much of it is not biodegradable. The gently rolling vortexes of the Eastern and Western Garbage Patches gradually draw in the bottle. Finally, the bottle travels eastward on the North Pacific Current. Near the coast of Japan, the bottle may travel north on the powerful Kuroshiro Current. There, it may catch the North Equatorial Current, which crosses the vast Pacific. A plastic water bottle discarded off the coast of California, for instance, takes the California Current south toward Mexico. The circular motion of the gyre draws debris into this stable center, where it becomes trapped. The area in the center of a gyre tends to be very calm and stable. The North Pacific Subtropical Gyre is formed by four currents rotating clockwise around an area of 20 million square kilometers (7.7 million square miles): the California current, the North Equatorial current, the Kuroshio current, and the North Pacific current. Increasingly, however, it also refers to the garbage patch as a vortex of plastic waste and debris broken down into small particles in the ocean. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) defines a gyre as a large system of swirling ocean currents. The entire Great Pacific Garbage Patch is bounded by the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. The zone acts like a highway that moves debris from one patch to another. This convergence zone is where warm water from the South Pacific meets up with cooler water from the Arctic. These areas of spinning debris are linked together by the North Pacific Subtropical Convergence Zone, located a few hundred kilometers north of Hawaii. The patch is actually comprised of the Western Garbage Patch, located near Japan, and the Eastern Garbage Patch, located between the U.S. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also known as the Pacific trash vortex, spans waters from the West Coast of North America to Japan. Marine debris is litter that ends up in oceans, seas, and other large bodies of water. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a collection of marine debris in the North Pacific Ocean. ![]() The library also began to maintain an archive of community history. Funds to buy library materials came from donations, fines, and rental income until 1942, when the Community Chest began to provide some funding for library operations. The City also furnished and maintained the building and grounds. Operated by a committee of the Civic Club, it was staffed by a librarian, Bernadette Dowdy, who was paid by the City of Texas City. The library was a cooperative effort between the Civic Club and the City of Texas City. Early reports show that the library initially started with approximately 900 volumes, but by September 1928, the holdings had increased to more than 2,100 volumes. By the spring of 1914, they opened a reading room in a room donated by the old Southern Hotel, at the corner of Texas Avenue and Third Street. Helen Moore and a group of community women organized the Civic Club and began working on this idea. In this tutorial, you’ll install and configure React Router, build a set of routes, and connect to them using the component. With declarative routing, you can create intuitive routes that are human-readable, making it easier to manage your application architecture. This means that you can declare exactly which of your components has a certain route. The library is designed with intuitive components to let you build a declarative routing system for your application. React Router is one of the most popular routing frameworks for React. The Taurus moon wants to care and be cared for on a deeply creaturely level. Moon in Aries folk experience difficult childhoods where a certain amount of emotional self-sufficiency became necessary for survival. The lesson to be learned by the lunar Aries is that when they allow anger to inspire change within them, rather than conspire to unmake them, they are limitless. At its highest expression, it is the fuel that moves us forward and through. Anyone who has ever spontaneously combusted had an Aries moon.īecause the extreme expression of anger is violence, we as a collective forget that anger has value, especially as a tool for survival and triumph. Ever-ready to defend or strike, they often imagine threats where no threat exists. Not only are those with Aries moons prepared for war, they prefer it, as it improves circulation and gives them a sense of purpose. This quality makes them quick to temper and quick to quarrel, case in point our beloved Cardi B who engaged in wars great and small with the likes of Nicki Minaj, conservative commentator Candace Owens, a crew of trash-talking 10-year-olds, and even Peppa Pig. The need to express is powerful for the lunar Aries: they’ve got to spit out that fire lest they self immolate. Despite or because of this, they make for fiercely protective parents and impassioned activists. Because of this, they develop into radically sovereign adults who greet dependence of any kind with outward hostility. “Mine” and “now” are their guiding principles and you will never, ever have to ask them how they feel. ![]() Hair triggers and hellfire, Aries moon individuals are admirably direct about their needs and abjectly impatient about meeting them. Air moons intellectualize emotion, preferring reason to outburst, and cool detachment to hot blooded engagement. Their approach can be jarring but there’s a beauty and clarity to their bluntness. Fire moons react instinctively, intensely and oft irrationally. The ruling element of the moon sign is also of great consequence. The moon has long been associated with fertility and childbirth. How are we fed and formed folks? By the light of the ever-loving moon. Within the birth chart, astrologers look to that shadow to determine survival instincts, defense mechanisms and even eating habits. If the sun is the light we shine, the moon is the shadow we keep. The moon reveals our style of need and the nourishment we did and didn’t receive as children. Along with the rising sign, the sun and the moon make up the holy trinity known in astrology as “ the big three.” What does your moon sign mean? While the sun stays in each zodiac sign for roughly a month, the moon changes every two to 2½ days. Nay, the moon is an equally important qualifier in our quest for self-knowledge. The sun gets most of the shine when it comes to astrology, but fate and feeling are not determined by that showboating yellow dwarf star alone. When individuals partake in cultural appropriation, they participate in the deculturalisation of racial aesthetic expression. This type of performance is arguably one of the first forms of cultural appropriation, highlighting that white society’s adoption of the Black experience is not a new phenomenon but a historical trend. Ministrelsy aimed to mock Blackness and reinforce the racial and social hierarchy in America. Ministrelsy, which was first established in the United States in 1843, is when a white performer would dress up in blackface, dance, sing and or perform comic routines based on stereotyped depictions of Black people. In his book of the same name, Lipsitz notes that “white people are encouraged to invest in whiteness, through public policy and private prejudice work, and remain true to an identity that provides them with resources, power and opportunity.” One way in which white people possessively invest in whiteness is through Ministrelsy. After years of takedowns, why now? Surprisingly enough, the answer lies in the exact reason white people engaged in this behaviour in the first place, and American Studies scholar, George Lipsitz calls it the ‘Possessive Investment in Whiteness’. She traded her grills and cornrows for pink dresses, puppet shows and pigtails.Īfter all of this, it can be difficult to understand why we’re seeing white people flock back to whiteness. For her song “We Can’t Stop”, Cyrus told her songwriters, Timothy and Theron Thomas, “I want urban, I want something that just feels Black.” Once she achieved what she wanted (distance from Hannah and Miley Stewart), she returned to whiteness. During this era, Cyrus wore dreadlocks, cornrows and gold grills. ![]() It caused controversy but not enough, so she searched for something that unquestionably conveyed rebellion in the eyes of whiteness: blackness. She released “Can’t Be Tamed” in 2010 to move away from this idealisation. Whether she liked it or not, she was seen as a role model for young girls from a very young age. Before then, Miley was desperately trying to move away from being seen solely as Hannah Montana/Miley Stewart – a character so beloved for her girl next door persona and superstardom. The ‘Ghetto Hot Cheeto Girls’ trend is reminiscent of the Miley Cyrus identity crisis of 2013-2015. While Ray was honouring the Rosas of the world, those outside of Black and Latinx cultures attempted to make a mockery of her and poorly caricatured her. Black and Chicanx cultures heavily influence the ‘hot cheeto girl’ aesthetic, and essentially Ray’s homage to his culture became something incredibly ugly online. He was and is so in love with her and believes her essence is in him. Ray himself stated that he even created the Rosa character because he knew girls like that and had them in his family. Ray, who is Latinx, created a character that many people loved on the internet. ![]() The term “Hot Cheeto Girl” came into popularity through Adam Ray ’s viral TikToks, where he would play a character called ‘Rosa’. ![]() Listen to these passages where Birmingham imagines that moment of exile: It was the 28-year-old Dostoevsky's reading aloud at a political meeting of a so-called "impertinent" and "freethinking" letter - written by someone else - that led to his arrest and exile to Siberia in 1849. Birmingham explores the radical political fervor that almost destroyed Dostoevsky's life. Then there's the dangerous world of politics. In particular, he explores the real-life career of a Parisian poet-murderer named Pierre-François Lacenaire, who inspired the character of Raskolnikov. We hear about Dostoevsky's noble-but-precarious background his friends, mistresses and love of gambling.īirmingham also widens the scope of his narrative, tracing the emergence of what we would call "true crime" literature in the 19 th century. To dramatize how such a strange tale came to be, Birmingham, as you'd expect, delves into Dostoevsky's early life. His angle of approach on Crime and Punishment is that Dostoevsky's revolutionary subject in that novel is consciousness itself - specifically, how the idealistic murderer, Raskolnikov, is captivated by free-floating political and philosophical ideas that cause him to see himself and the world off-kilter. By the end of his own superb books on those "masterpieces," Birmingham makes the case that no other word will do.īook Reviews 'Most Dangerous Book': A Rich Treasury Charting James Joyce's 'Ulysses' These days, the word "masterpiece" is also regarded - in the academy at least - as a quaint cliché, but Birmingham throws it down when referring to novels like Ulysses and Crime and Punishment. These are not new subjects but Birmingham writes the kind of deeply researched and deeply felt literary biographies for which clichéd rave terms, "immersive" and "reads like a novel" were coined. for over 10 years after the completion of its serialization in 1920.īirmingham's latest book, The Sinner and The Saint, gives the same treatment to Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. His first, The Most Dangerous Book, was a bestselling critically lauded account of how James Joyce came to write Ulysses and the censorship battles that prevented that novel from being published in the U.S. ![]() Vinitsky also proposes that the comic narrator of "Bobok" can be seen as a literary mask of Dostoevskii himself, who employs philosophical irony as a means of conveying a metaphysical message in the age of positivism and disbelief. There's something audaciously old-fashioned about Kevin Birmingham's biographies of great novels. In addition to examining the ideological and artistic origins of Fedor Dostoevskii's portrayal of the underworld in his short "cemetery story" "Bobok" (1873), Ilya Vinitsky probes the theosophical context of Dostoevskii's "fantastic realism." Vinitsky considers this story a programmatic "theosophical menippea" that artistically "voices" and "tests" Emanuel Swedenborg's doctrine of posthumous self-exposure of the wicked souls who are no longer restrained by "fear of the law, of the loss of reputation, of honor, and of life" and laugh shamelessly "at honesty and justice." Vinitsky argues that Dostoevskii was interested in Swedenborg's spiritual psychologism as an epistemological method and contends that Swedenborg's interpretation of devils as former humans, with their "earthly" consciousness, inner sufferings, and memories, perfectly corresponded to Dostoevskii's symbolic anthropology. In addition to common series elements like secrets and unlockables, there is also an optional time attack mode. Both methods use motion controls for the "Ground Pound" move. The game has two control schemes, with the standard system using the Wii Remote in conjunction with the Nunchuk, while a more classical approach requires that the Wii Remote be held sideways. Both Donkey and Diddy can pound the ground to defeat enemies and unveil secret items. To avoid problems arising from differences in the players' skills, Diddy can hop on Donkey's back to take on a more passive role, while his jetpack can be used to make his partner's jumps easier. If a player's character dies in two-player mode, it can be brought back by using the other character to hit a "DK Barrel" that floats into view, a mechanic similar to the one used in New Super Mario Bros. Multiplayer mode enables a second player to control Diddy Kong. ![]() In single-player mode, players can only play as Donkey Kong, although Diddy Kong rides on Donkey Kong's back, and Donkey Kong can use Diddy's jetpack to jump further.
